Check first

The EPA says ducts don’t need routine cleaning. So we check the three signs first and tell you the answer.

Do your ducts need cleaning?

Substantial mold in the ducts or system?

Rodents or insects in the ducts?

Dust or debris coming out of your vents?

This follows the EPA’s guidance. It is not an inspection.

Know your vents

The vents you can see are where an inspection starts.

Supply register

Blows conditioned air into a room. The EPA lists dust or debris released from supply registers as one sign to consider cleaning.

Return grille

Pulls room air back toward the system.

Ceiling diffuser

A supply outlet set into the ceiling, often square.

Floor register

A supply outlet set into the floor.

Linear slot

A long, narrow supply outlet.

Round diffuser

A round supply outlet, often on exposed ducts.

Questions

Does duct cleaning prevent health problems?

The EPA says duct cleaning has never been shown to prevent health problems. It recommends cleaning only as needed, not as routine maintenance.

When should I consider it?

The EPA lists three signs: substantial visible mold growth inside hard-surface ducts or on other parts of the system, an infestation of rodents or insects, or ducts so clogged with dust and debris that particles are released into the home from your vents.

Why does mold come back?

Mold needs moisture. The EPA says that if the moisture problem is not fixed, mold will return after cleaning.

What should I watch for when hiring?

The EPA advises against companies that make sweeping health claims, push duct cleaning as routine maintenance, or say they are “certified by EPA.”

How much does it cost?
